2025 International Scholarship for Chinese Language Teachers at Zhejiang University

To address the growing global demand for Chinese language teachers, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) has established the
International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship. This scholarship supports the professional development of Chinese language teachers outside China and helps promote Chinese language education worldwide.

Confucius Institutes, independent Confucius Classrooms, selected HSK test centers, foreign educational institutions, Chinese language teacher training programs, Chinese departments at foreign universities, professional associations for Chinese language teaching, and Chinese embassies (consulates) abroad can recommend outstanding students and in-service Chinese language teachers for this opportunity. Recipients will have the chance to study international Chinese language education and related fields at Chinese universities.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be a non-Chinese citizen.
  • Have a friendly attitude toward China, no criminal record, and comply with China’s laws and Zhejiang University’s regulations.
  • Be in good physical and mental health, with a strong academic and behavioral record.
  • Have a genuine interest in Chinese language education and related work.
  • Be between 18 and 35 years old (as of September 1, 2025). In-service Chinese language teachers may apply up to the age of 45.

Scholarship Types & Qualifications

(i) Master’s Degree in International Chinese Language Education

  • Duration: Up to two academic years (starting September 2025).
  • Requirements:
    • Bachelor’s degree.
    • HSK Level 5 score of 210 or above and HSKK (Intermediate) score of 60 or above.
    • Priority for those with an employment contract or proof of intent to teach after graduation.

(ii) One-Year Study Program (Chinese Language and Literature)

  • Duration: 11 months (starting September 2025).
  • Requirements:
    • HSK Level 4 score of 180 or above and HSKK (Intermediate) score of 60 or above.
    • Applicants who have received a similar scholarship in the past three years are not eligible.

(iii) One-Semester Study Program (Chinese Language and Literature)

  • Duration: 5 months (starting in September 2025 or March 2026).
  • Requirements:
    • HSK Level 3 score of 180 or above.
    • HSKK test score required.
    • Applicants who have received a similar scholarship in the past three years are not eligible.

Scholarship Coverage

The scholarship includes:

  • Full tuition fees.
  • Accommodation fees.
  • Monthly living allowance.

Application Deadlines (Beijing Time)

  • May 15, 2025 (for programs starting in September 2025).
  • October 31, 2025 (for the One-Semester Program starting in March 2026).

Application Process

  1. Apply online via the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website and the Zhejiang University online application system
  2. Complete the application form and upload required documents before the deadlines.
  3. Track your application status.
  4. If accepted, confirm with Zhejiang University and complete the necessary procedures to study in China.

Required Documents

(For all applicants):

  • Passport scan (valid until at least March 1, 2026).
  • HSK and HSKK test score reports (valid within two years).
  • Reference letter from the recommending institution.

(For Master’s Degree applicants):

  • Highest degree certificate (Bachelor’s diploma required before registration if not available at the time of application).
  • Academic transcripts from Bachelor’s degree.
  • Personal statement in Chinese (minimum 1500 words, covering study/work experience, reasons for application, and study proposal).
  • Two recommendation letters from full/associate professors (must include professor’s signature, contact number, and email).
  • Academic achievements or published papers (if available).
  • Form for Provisional Acceptance by ZJU Supervisor (if applicable).
  • Employment agreement with a teaching institution (if available).
  • Foreigner Physical Examination Form (completed in English, stamped by a hospital, and with a sealed photograph of the applicant).
  • Non-criminal record certificate (valid for six months).
  • Additional documents for applicants with changed citizenship status (proof of nationality, household registration cancellation, etc.).
  • Commitments for Zhejiang University Master’s Application (must be completed and signed).
  • Note:
  • Do not mail or email hard copies of application materials.
  • Documents must be in Chinese or English. If in another language, notarized translations are required.

Policies for In-Service Teachers & Chinese Bridge Winners

(1) In-Service Chinese Language Teachers:

  • Must provide proof of employment and a recommendation letter from their employer.

(2) Chinese Bridge Winners:

  • Must submit their International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Certificate from the competition along with their application.

Additional Notes

  • Degree students must pass an annual assessment as per scholarship policies.
  • Scholarship recipients who fail the pre-enrollment medical check, withdraw early, fail to register on time, or suspend their studies may lose their scholarship.
  • Original degree certificates must be submitted at enrollment, or admission will be canceled.
